3A: Focus on a Collaborative Work Environment
The school executive understands and acts on the understanding of the positive role that a collaborative environment can play in the school’s culture.
Our EOC course teachers have common planning periods so that they can conduct their Professional Learning Communities during school hours. They meet two times a week. In January 2016, we expanded the Math I PLC from two teachers to six. All six did not have the same planning period, so an after-school meeting schedule was developed for their team. They use the time to analyze data, discuss classroom instruction and align instruction to the curriculum.
My NELA Problem of Practice focused on developing a stronger Math I Professional Learning Community. By providing common planning periods and increasing the number of teachers teaching Math I, the Math department became a more collaborative and robust learning community.

The school executive develops and uses shared vision, values and goals to define the identity of culture of the school.

With a little bit of assistance from another teacher and I, a group of our students created the above video about NVHS. We submitted it to North Carolina School Boards Association High School Student Video Contest that asked, "What's Super about Public Schools?"
I completed the above assignment after a Distinguished Leaders in Practice session that was focused on Cultural Leadership.
In January 2016, NELA Cohorts IV and V attended a Social Justice Retreat. I learned that in addition to safety and learning, we also have to focus on creating equitable schools in which students receive a liberating education (as opposed to an oppressive one). It is the job of school leaders to ensure success of every student.

All Department Chairs meet with the Leadership Team each month as the Principal's Cabinet. During this time, teachers have the opportunity to share what is going well, what they'd like to see improved, and how we can do it.
