Opportunity Culture
Phillips is in Year 2 of Opportunity Culture implementation. An Opportunity Culture Design Team re-visited our structures, using student data to drive decisions. The team adjusted course so that Phillips Middle School would have a full-release Math Multi-Classroom Leader for Mathematics only for the 2018-2019 school year.
North-Phillips Micro School of Innovation
A rigorous, authentic learning environment where students become the architects of their own lives - and our community’s extraordinary future workforce
Why a Micro School?
ECPS created a Micro School to pilot a radically different school model for Phillips Middle School and North Edgecombe High School. The primary focus is on project-based, interdisciplinary learning and building student resilience. The components of the model will be tested during the 2018-19 school year, with the possibility of expansion during the 2019-20 school year, and full implementation of the new model at North Edgecombe HS and Phillips MS during the 2020-21 school year. Learning from this pilot will be shared throughout the school district, and will have an impact on schools throughout ECPS.

How does learning in the Micro School differ from traditional school models?
- Project-Based Learning: Students partner with teachers to identify their passions and design projects to explore them. Students monitor their learning as they pursue their purpose. Teachers ensure the required NC standards are integrated into the projects.
- Standards Labs: Students use a dedicated portion of their project time to master prioritized skills / standards. This is a blended approach; students receive individualized 1:1 and small group instruction from teachers, and engage in personalized online work.
- Genius Bar: When students, teachers, or experts decide students need targeted support during projects or Standards Labs, they go to the Genius Bar, where an expert guides them along their learning journey.
- Meta-Moment Communities: Students begin and end their day with a caring adult they feel deeply connected to. Students answer the questions, “Am I safe? Am I loved? Am I ready to learn?"
- Roses in Concrete: Students engage in an in-depth social-emotional learning curriculum.
